Destinee’s speech: ‘Teenage girls suffer body image issues due to the way women are portrayed in the media’

Teenagers are prone to have low self esteem that is caused by depreciating of their body images. The portray of body image in social media, such as Instagram and Path, can make the condition more severe. Some teenagers are aware of the condition and they attempt to speak their minds out about the situation.

Destinee Lee, a 7 grader of SMPK 6 PENABUR, did the attempt in her speech. The speech was conducted during English class.

Her speech was good. It contains about the explanation on the issue. Besides, it invites people, especially girls, to be strong and not to get suffered from body image issues. She even encourages people to fight cyber bullies. Here is the script of Destine Lee’s Speech:

I personally agree to the statement saying “Teenage girls suffer body image issues due to the way women are portrayed in the media”.

These issues are caused mainly because of the social media stereotypes such as what is the so-called perfect body for women, hates for obesity, and even hates to the anorexic. Many victims has fallen to the hands of cyber bullies, some calling them fat, unworthy, unloved and many more. A lot of people may not realise but this is a serious issue since it has caused a lot of problems to teenage girls all over the world, it has caused depression, stress, and even self-harm.

Thankfully women empowerment has grown over the decade and is fighting cyber bullies for humiliating any more girls. So if you’re asking for my personal statement on this matter I would say this to everybody: nobody should be insecure with their body so just be confident with yourself, the world will try to break you down but you have to stay strong and keep going with full determination to show everyone that you are strong.

Now, I come to remind you not to judge people based on their looks such as the saying “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, and help us teenage girls fight back the cyber bullies

Thank you

Destinee Lee
